decarbonizing

After seeing a few social media adverts about terracleaning an engine. I decided to look into it to see what it does & discovered via youtube you can basiclly do exact same thing with plain old water. What i want to know is has anyone ever tried this method as it suposed to be an old school mechanics trick to make a car run better as you spray into the air intake (after the maf) when engine is at optimum tempreture (warmed up). Water gets turned into steam almost instantly & breaks down carbon build up. It will eventually escape through exhaust (white smoke). Too much water could cause hydro lock which is bad news but videos state that will happen if you use cups of water not if you use a spray bottle.
Anyone ever tried this or knows of it I would like to hear your experiences
