Ford KA overheating problems

A few nights ago I could hear the coolant bubbling in the tank in my Ford KA 04 plate, the warning light came on but luckily I'd just pulled into my road. I let it cool down and checked and could not find any leaks. The same happened the next morning, so I took it straight to the garage. They had it 5 hours and could find nothing wrong with it! They even phoned and asked my permission to take it for a tide, which they did, but it didn't overheat. I've driven it for the last few days with no problems, until this afternoon when it overheated again, coolant bubbling and white steam coming from under the bonnet. It's not leaking, the fans working and it's blowing out hot air. The garage said the pipes, tank, valves, head gasket etc all are okay. I had a new heater control valve fitted last year and a new hose and clip that feeds through the dashboard to the heather 6 weeks ago. Please help? Could it be the thermostat, but if it is, why does it work done days and others days it doesn't??? Please help! Should I take it back to the garage and have a new thermostat fitted and if I do, how much will it cost approximately??? Thank you!
