Excessive revving vs traction control warning

Zafira Design CDTI 1.6 (automatic/diesel) 64k miles.
Slight higher revs recently whilst car idle/moving - no other problems tho.
Battery flat 4wks ago - restarted by breakdown service - no probs since (altho slight higher revs continued)....until this week suddenly the "traction control" light remained on at ignition stage and, for some reason, the revs were uncontrollable. Clunking gear change. Car travels at 15mph with no pressure on accelerator. No response when pressure placed on accelerator so can't increase speed.
Took to garage - typically, traction control light went out so no "problem" for them to witness and nothing showing up as likely problem.
Happened again yesterday - managed to get to garage with higher revs so they could witness. Turned off engine, didn't happen again!
Agreed to replace battery (as was needed anyway) to see if that would assist (so electrics weren't being over-worked!).
Also, mechanic suggested trying to ensure traction control warning light had gone out prior to starting engine - to see if that made a difference.
I did this for all journey's since - and it seems to avoid the problem (altho the slightly higher revs are still present).
However, I forgot to wait for the light to go out today, and it happened again. If I turn off the engine, and try again, the light simply stays on.
Logically, I understand there should (presumably) be no connection between the traction control light being on, and the engine performance.......yet there is.
Any ideas please (I have to drive to Blackpool and Cumbria tmw ......)??
