My parked car was reversed into whilst outside my house

So it has almost been 4 weeks and I don't know how long these things take, but I'll start from the beginning.

It happened at about 22:50, i was in bed as had to be up at 4:30am my mum woke me alerting me to having seen someone reverse into my car which was parked outside my house for the second time (the first one she only heard whilst sat in the living room) she got their number plate as they made their get away and i phoned the police as soon as she woke me. Filled in the usual stuff asap and alerted my insurance company the next evening. The damage to my car was a good few scratches and a nice crack just under my headlight on the drivers side.

I'm worried that where i was parked would come into dispute as up my close it's difficult to make sure others can pass as well as enabling my parents car to get out the drive, and my house is opposite another part of the street leading to more houses but i have always left enough room for passing cars to go up and come out that part of the close.

The insurers were quick enough to get my car in for repair and that's great but it took a couple of weeks for them to get in contact with the other driver who is also insured with the same company (1st Central) and they are obviously disputing it, the insurer told me they said they were at work until 5pm that day which doesn't strengthen their story and now the police have told me today that they can do no more its down to the insurer but that the person in question did write back to the police saying they were down my street but they had left at 22:00. They are saying its a case of mistaken identity, but my mum saw them reverse into it the second time, surely that must count for something? We have no idea who the other driver is apart from knowing the reg and that its a small silver car.

The insurer has requested to look at their car but when i saw it (from a distance) i couldn't see any visible damage, my mum has only seen them one other time up the street but they went soon after.

I feel like I'm the one who is likely to be footing the bill at this rate though and have no idea how this is going to work out for me as I've recently changed insurer which was arranged prior and now stuck with an extra £1000 on top with no claims to say for as I've only just been passed one year now and with this happening only 2 weeks away from the change over it wasn't what i was expecting.

Sorry for this being so long winded but just wondered if it's just a case of waiting it out or pressuring the insurance company to get on with getting the results and what do you think the likely outcome is?
