Berlingo 1.6hdi clutch????

Hello,

A friend has a 2005 berlingo 1.6hdi. This morning she told me the clutch pedal felt a bit stiff and now there is a horrendous squeeling coming from the engine bay plus a horrible burning smell.

I cant narrow down the squeeling as it seems to come from all over the engine. the drive belt is tight, but the squeeling does seem to get a bit better when the clutch pedal is pushed in.

Would this occur from a worn out clutch or possible the squeeling is more likely gearbox bearings?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
