Severe engine stall.

My car is a 1.9 TDI. Yesterday, I was pulling slowly into a local shop car park in low gear, when a young lad came out from between cars and across my path. I braked hard, probably being a bit late on the clutch pedal, and the car loudly shuddered to a stop - such that my wife thought we had hit something. I have never experienced a stall like this before.
On the rest of the way home (about half a mile), the car seemed to be OK.
This got me to wondering if, under such conditions, the toothed belt has ever been known to 'jump' a tooth or so. My cam belt is new; having been changed only at the end of last February.
Even if it only jumped by one tooth, I would imagine that there would be a significant change in engine's behaviour.
