M25 Variable Limit Help

Hey guys.

I received a letter from the nice guys at Essex police today informing me that i had broke the variable speed limit on the M25 just after the M11 junction heading anti-clockwise.

On internet inspection i see that there are many, many people being caught out here and while of course speeders should be punished i'm getting confused over why i'm worthy of fining and taking points off my license.

Driving on motorways has always been a pleasure for me as the roads are often empty or the traffic is light, but due to my job and my profit ambitions i often travel below 60. I'm a bit of a mpg freak! I'm almost someone you don't want to argue with over motorway driving. Stay left unless overtaking, follow speeds overhead etc.

This one incident sadly has left me seething and confused as to the real intentions of our leaders.

..........................

Travelling home from kent, the traffic is very light at midnight. The overhead gantries suddenly show a speed limit of 40 or 50. (I think it was 40 based on memory) but thats not the point for my questioning. But for arguement sakes lets say its 40. It also says the road is going down to one lane.

There's me, doing a steady 50-60 while being passed by all the crazy gits and being tailgated by lotties, how exactly do i get my speed down to 40 in a safe manner? and then push into lane 4 which was the lane open.

Of course, after 3 miles there's no roadworks, no queue, NOTHING. and i've been clocked doing 62mph. What exactly is the deal here? I am right in thinking i MUST stick to the speed limit of these things no matter how dangerous the instruction? because at that moment doing 60mph was far more safer than slowing to 40 and making my way across 4 lanes of motorway.

Any advice?
