Getting new insurance policy for another car, but current claim not yet concluded

Hi everyone,

I had another post about an accident where the third party driver denied his liability, and now I'm still awaiting further updates from my insurer. Without witness, I was told it is likely 50-50 split. Anyway, I decided to make this post as I have a few new questions which are more about buying insurnace instead of the claim itself.

My insurer wrote-off my 15-year-old car, as expected, so I will have to buy another used car soon. But there are many questions that I am not sure about when trying to obtain insurance quotes. I got those similar questions from confused.com, moneysupermarket.com, gocompare.com etc.

1) After I declared that there was accident last month, I have to choose an answer for 'type of accident', but the common options are:
"Accident - Driver at fault", or
"Accident - Not at fault",, or
"Accident - Both at fault".
Since the case is not yet concluded, I don't have an answer. Any advise? I actually tried all three answers, and to my surprise, the quotes are often the same from the cheapest few insurers. It seems to me that 'Accident' is one category, regardless whose fault is was.

2) In the current policy, I was the named driver (and also the driver at the time of accident), and my husband was the policy holder. When answering questions for the new quote, we were asked 'if you had any claim in the past 5 years'. Should I put the claim details under my name as I was the one involved in the accident? Or, has it to be under the policy holder's name? Well, I just don't want to proivde the detail twice, risking being mistakenly considered having two claims.

3) If I choose to go for the best quote, it means I'll change the insurance company. First, am I allowed to do so? Second, will I have trouble getting the letter from my current insurer regarding my protected NCB. Are they legally bound to provide the letter? I got 11 years of protected NCB so far. And I am with the current insurer for 17 months. I assume the new insurer will need the letter to formally cover me, right?

Would appreciate if anyone can share advice. Thanks.
