Terrible service

Today my car broke down on the way back from down south. Long story, but me, wife and 86 year old Mother are home minus car.
I tried to phone the RAC, finally making use of their cover after 25 years of membership. My called was answered immediately. I went through the options for breakdown and then proceeded to wait for my call to be answered by a person. I gave up after 21 minutes. I tried again thinking that maybe I had been cut off. After another 20 minutes of waiting I received a message from my mobile provider to say my £40 buffer designed to prevent me running up large roaming charges, had been exhausted.
In the hope of beating the system, I tried again, but this time selected the option saying I had been in an accident. Thought maybe this would get a faster response and they could transfer me. Gave up after 5 minutes on that one!
Fortunatley found a nearby garage who towed me in, arranged the repair and got us a lift to the nearest station.
Once home, I called the RAC again, who answered straight away. Happily gave me a phone number(0833 2000999) that I could have used to avoid any phone charges. Pity they couldn't put this in the recorded message that offered to sell me a new battery or tyres for 45 minutes.
Customer services told me that they had been very busy today( cold but bright sunshine, no rain or snow) and that their average time to answer the phone over the Xmas period had been 45 minutes. Repeat, 45 minutes to answer the phone, not to get to you on the roadside.
