Ford Fiesta 1.25 Zetec Problems *Help Apreciated*

I went to set of this morning to University car started up all fine and perfect got about 5-10 minutes into my drive there when i look at the tachometer/Rev Counter and it was at 0 and kept spiking then few 100 yards down the road the engine light came on so I pulled over for about 10 mins checking what it could be let the engine cool down then started it up. The tachometer started working again but the engine light is still on.

Anyone have any idea what it could be the car still drives ok, but I don't want to be damaging the engine.
