Going north out of Burford on the A361, then LEFT onto the A424. Here, there is a "Road Closed" sign, but no diversionary guide. It is not clear if it refers to the Taynton road straight ahead, or to the A424 itself. Many miles further on, just short of Stow-on-the-Wold, one arrives at the barrier. Stangely, there is a roadworks fellow with a wagon at the barrier, and he was moving the barrier to let a few vehicles through in both directions, then closing it again. Asking him why he was letting certain vehicles pass, he mumbled something virtually unintelligible about a hotel. My question about "what diversion?" brought the reply "at the last roundabout". I pointed out that the last roundabout was the one to Chipping Norton, and the Closed sign was on the A464 after this. After this, I got back into my car - this guy was about the thickest plonker I have met. There was an unmarked single track road to my right, with a "NO HGVs" sign, so I took this road and, eventually, managed to enter Stow by this road.
What annoyed me was the fact that (a) the roadworks personnel had erected a sign with no diversion information, and (b) had put a moron in charge of the barrier - obviously because they expected a continual arrival of confused drivers.
