Returning from holiday, I decided to check out my bank statement. Hold on - the Caravan Club had taken my annual subs (£43 this year) twice; once at the beginning of June, and again in July. Contacting the C.C. produced no record of the incorrect June payment, so I phoned my bank. They had two separate Direct Debit reference numbers - the correct one was my C.C. membership number; so logic says that the other reference was someone else's membership number.
Checking back through old statements, this has happened every year starting in 2008, and the deficit is £235.
Clearly, someone doesn't check their statements - or are they keeping stum?
The C.C. finance dept are now dealing with the problem. The Data Protection Act, of course, prevents me from knowing who has been receiving my cash - but their membership number must be 12490179.
