right, this is really long winded but please bear with me - i could do with the advice!
A neighbour of mine reversed off his drive straight into the drivers side of my campervan causing quite considerable amount of damage to it (to the point of damaging lots of things inside too!)
He has admitted full liability and has claimed through his insurer Direct Line - they have said that they will provide a courtesy campervan/motorhome to us as we are due to go on holiday with friends and family in our camper on the 16 August this year (yes 10 days time!!!!) however due to it being a camper, this isn't something that they can deal so put me in touch with 3 or 4 different rental companies that could possibly help - which they haven't, they have all said that due to the time of year and the high demand for campers they cannot get one to hire to us!
Although when I checked on-line I found 2 companies locally that will loan us one and charge the insurers - but the insurers want us to pay £500 security deposit for it (ive heard of paying a deposit for a hire vehicle in the region of £50-100, but not £500!!!) I have told them that i cannot pay this and their reply was along the lines of 'its that or nothing else can be done' so they have put me in a position of pay or lose my holiday that i've already paid for (The money of which i will lose if i do not go) - how have i become the one that suffers? I thought i was the victim in all this?
I have suggested that they provide a courtesy vehicle big enough for 4 people and luggage and pay for suitable accommodation (near where our family and friends are staying) and i got a stern NO.
i even thought about taking it away and letting them repair it on our return, but the assessor has been and is concerned about the gas pipe and electric cables that run along the side that he hit. it is also not watertight any more as he has spilt the panels too and the chairs that pull out into a bed also don't work because of the damage. I also have no heater or running water now as this got damaged when he hit the camper.
so i cant even take it away to get my holiday :(
My husband has taken time off work for this holiday (due to his line of work, he will not get paid for time off) we were happy to do this for our holiday, but now that he will be sat at home doing nothing and he cannot get the extra time at work as he booked it off and hasn't given enough notice to be placed with another team :( So we've also needlessly lost 2 weeks wages too!!
all the insurers have offered is £30.08 per day that i do not have my camper and nothing else
I will add, that the person who hit the camper has his courtesy car already and his car has been taken away already - yet mine is still sat outside my house waiting to hear its fate :( The repair centre have told me its in excess of £4500 to repair the side!!!! :(
so my questions are:
what can i do?
Where do i stand in regards to losing my holiday?
Do i have to pay the £500? The insurers have said that they will not help in regards to this, 'the hirer must pay this'
Any other advice you can give would be greatly appreciated.
