Some of you may remember I posted on here about having to have driving assessment in May. After the DVLA took over a year to decide from me informing them I had a head injury in July 2012. Well after yet more time wasting from the DVLA I finally got a provisional to take some driving lessons the time to get my provisional was more than double the time it should of been. Well on Wednesday I had an hours lesson with an ADI who deals with people who have had head injuries and need help getting through assessments. The drive overall was good and pretty much how I normally drive so the instructor now has an idea of how I normally drive and a few minor things to improve on.
Mainly stuff that I've got in habit of doing that I know I can do but anyone assessing me could put it down to not driving safely. Stuff like not slowing down early enough, going 1 or 2mph over limit and one thing I've noticed I don't do enough which the ADI picked up on is mirror checks. I'm actually surprised I didn't not check them enough much sooner as this was one thing I had to keep reminding myself to do on driving tests. I thought once I'd passed it would be my first bad habit but I did keep checking them til after my accident then I keep forgetting. I do for anything like changing lanes or when what's behind will effect what I'm to do but it's the normal driving when what's behind won't really effect me I forget. But towards end of lesson there was an actual reason checking them would help as an ambulance was coming up behind flashing lights but no siren. So that's probably a reason to keep checking them.
ADI said to book assessment for end of September as he's away at beginning and mite only get 1 lesson a week. I'm going to ask to go to assessment area an hour or so before the assessment on day I have it as it will be the only chance I get to drive in that area apart from on assessment as it's an hour drive from me. My ADI knows the area they use so he can tell me any tricky areas. If I remember is different.
