Mazda 3 1.6 cc Petrol, 2010 - Catalytic Convertor

After Diesel accidentally put in petrol tank, drained and cleaned by RAC (excellent service), engine warning light keeps coming on - after replacement of 1 lambda (?) sensor, the engine warning light has come back on. Our helpful local garage we have used for years did warn that this might happen. If so the real censor may be the problem and that is a Mazda part they can't source. So it was my gamble.

Off to the Mazda dealer who says "rear sensor occaslting (is that a typo?) at a constant rpm. Cat not working well looks to be damaged, needs replacing"

Supply and fit catalytic over £1,000"

Plus they have charged us for the investigation - I realise it is their time but for the cost of work they are talking about, one would think they could offset againt £1,000 worth of repair (our local repair rarely charges for diagnosis). Anyway, does this diagnosis sound appropriate to anybody out there? If it has to be done it has to be done but is there anywhere to get a second opinion in mid-essex?

Would much appreciate any input.

Thank You
